Golden Oldies

A free appointment for cats aged 11 years or over

Informative image: An old cat.

Cats today are living longer, healthier lives than ever before and it is not unusual for us to see cats in their late teens and twenties! Our goal is to work with you so your cat can be happy and healthy to enjoy these golden years.

The health problems of older cats are subtle and can be difficult to spot. They may appear to be a normal part of ‘old age’ or ‘slowing down’ but if we detect these problems early on, we can effectively treat, or even cure many of them before they impact on your pet’s quality of life.

Signs of disease in older cats can include one of more of the following:

  • weight loss
  • change in appetite
  • increased thirst
  • reduced activity levels
  • sleeping more
  • vomiting
  • a change in toileting habits

However, sometimes your cat can hide these well and may not be showing any symptoms - this is why a regular health check is so important.

Here at Moor Cottage Veterinary Hospital we invite you and your senior cat for a free Golden Oldie appointment with one of our Qualified Veterinary Nurses.

During this appointment the nurse will:

  • Go through your completed questionnaire. This will highlight any areas where we are looking for the early signs of many age related conditions.
  • Take a blood pressure reading, which looks for abnormal blood pressure. If left untreated high blood pressure can cause significant damage to the kidneys and eyes but without any obvious sign of problems.
  • Perform a weight check. Any changes will be noted and advice can be given on recommended diets.

As part of this free check-up we will test a sample of your cat's urine. This is a simple but very helpful test that can easily detect early signs of kidney problems and diabetes. Please call into us before your appointment and collect a bag of special cat litter to help collect a urine sample; then bring this sample with you to your appointment.

At Moor Cottage we know how special our older cats are. We have a quiet cat-only waiting room equipped with Feliway diffusers to help your cat feel secure, and you can be sure that they will always be treated kindly and gently. We can also provide a Feliway-sprayed towel to cover your cat basket, please just ask one of our reception team.

We run 'cat-only' appointment times - please ask reception for details.
